We all have that one person in our lives. The one who sees your work and tells you it’s not good enough. The person you try to avoid, but always seem to run into. He is always making you feel small, unworthy, and sometimes just plain stupid. You wish you could avoid this person, but it just seems like he’s everywhere. In your workplace, at home, when you’re out running errands. He’s ruining your life, and as hard as it may seem, it is time to tell him that he isn’t welcome anymore.
It’s time to get rid of your inner critic.
It’s easier said than done. It can be hard to pinpoint the exact moment our inner critic entered our lives, but most of us can concur that it happened sometime during our childhood. When someone has been in our lives that long, it is hard to let him go, but think of how unfair it is for you to keep him around. Think of the things he says to you!
You are not good at your job.
That person is better than you.
Bad hair day? Try bad hair every day.
If this was an external friend saying these things, I hope you’d kick them out of your life. You need to apply the same criteria to your inner critic. Don’t keep him around just to hold you back from your dreams. Think of all of the wonderful things you could accomplish if he wasn’t around to make you feel small.
Maybe you wouldn’t be afraid to ask your boss to consider you for the big promotion.
Maybe you would quit your dead-end job to follow your dream.
Maybe you would simply look in the mirror and finally see yourself as someone worthy of love and attention.
I dare you to cut ties with your inner critic. When he starts to say, you’re awful, hold up your hand and say, “Get lost, dude.” You are capable of anything you attempt, and when that little voice in your head starts to tell you otherwise, silence it and keep moving forward.
